The World Expo opened extravagantly on Friday night in Shanghai’s Pudong District with performances and fireworks spectacles. The Expo is perceived by the Chinese leadership as an important event showcasing China’s emergence as a crucial player in the 21st century. The Shanghai Expo is the most expensive world fair in the world’s history, with more than $50 billion used in preparations. 20 foreign leaders attended the opening ceremony, including French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife, Carla Bruni. The World Expo is expected to draw 70 million visitors until the end of October. ---posted by Ying Jia Huang
