China’s state-controlled Catholic Church ordained another bishop on Thursday, despite lacking Vatican approval. The move will likely worsen already sour relations with the Vatican, which has declared such appointments illegitimate and has urged all bishops to resist pressure from communist parties. China has ignored such statements, announcing its plans to ordain 40 bishops as soon as possible. Furthermore, three of China’s bishops loyal to the Vatican have gone missing recently.
